Permanent Resident Renewal

Apply to renew or replace a permanent resident card

A permanent resident in Canada must have a valid PR card or permanent resident travel document (PRTD) to return to Canada by plane, train, bus or boat.

Most PR cards are valid for five years, but some are only valid for one year. The expiry date is printed on the card. If your PR card will expire within six months, you should apply to renew your card.

If your card expires, you will have to apply for a new one. You are still a permanent resident if your card expires.

You should only apply for a PR card if:

  • You didn’t receive your PR card within 180 days of immigrating to Canada
  • Your PR card is expired or will expire in less than nine months
  • Your PR card has been lost, stolen, or destroyed
  • You legally changed your name and need to update your PR card.
